“As sports cardiologists (those cardiologists with a primary interest in the cardiovascular care of the athlete), we commend McClaskey and Bowers’ (p.12) thoughtful and thorough overview of preparticipation cardiac screening (PCS) in athletes, and the importance of the athletic trainer in the process. The PCS is a key area where there is a great need for athletic trainers, primary care providers and specialists to communicate efficiently and work together to ensure athletes get optimal cardiovascular care.

For example, sports cardiologists are skilled and knowledgeable in evaluating for underlying cardiovascular diseases and providing sports participation recommendations for those athletes with cardiac diseases or symptoms. However, we rarely see athletes upon their first presentation to the health care system. This is the job of the primary care provider and the AT… ”
